FULL TIME GROWER ON ORGANIC VEGETABLE FARM

We are a 10ha family run organic vegetable farm growing quality produce for sale at the farm gate and three weekly markets, with some wholesale. There's 2000m2 polytunnels with summer crops such as tomatoes, beans and cucumbers as well as salads and a range of field scale crops including brassicas, leeks, onions, carrots and squash. Much of our produce goes direct to the public, and we have a strong loyal customer base.

The farm has a good range of equipment and implements. Cultivations with plough, power harrow, ripper etc; mechanical planting and interrow weeding.

We're looking for someone to assist with planting, weeding, irrigating, harvesting and packing a wide range of seasonal organic vegetables for retail and wholesale. With plenty of scope to take responsibility, your role will develop according to skills and experience.

An organic vegetable grower on a small unit needs to be an all-rounder, equally happy in the field, polytunnel, workshop, packing shed or at market. During the growing season from April to October there is a lot going on, so you need to be level-headed and enjoy a challenge. Between November and March we're harvesting for the farm shop, markets and wholesale, along with general farm work. We are a team of six during growing season.

The work is quite physical with a fair amount done by hand. It'd be good if you have an ongoing interest in food production and the environment, enjoy being busy and want to take responsibility once you've learnt what's going on.

You need to be able to drive a van for deliveries and doing market occasionally. Training can be given in organic horticulture methods. You will need to be competent with machinery and familiar with outdoor or farm work and be willing to do occasional overtime (x1.5 after 8 hours or 40hrs/week) to get the job done.

This position offers good career development as it includes working in the business as well as growing vegetable crops.
