I have done basic tractor driving such as turning hay, power harrowing, rolling, mowing and towing the bowser and trailers. I also use the Merlo telehandler for feeding cattle, moving bales into/around the barns and for removing old fencing posts etc (I don't have a ticket). I undertake fencing repairs and installing new posts and wire.

Other livestock experience

I currently work on a sheep dairy farm, my duties include milking and all elements of sheep husbandry.

Lambing- confident with all presentations, multiple lambs, difficult lambings, wet fostering, adopter fostering, injecting, lambing ewe lambs. I can run a lambing shed of over 800 ewes on my own as well as teach vet students. I currently use CIDRS in our January lambing flock.

Lambs- Castrating, tail docking, raising orphan lambs, tubing, tagging, weighing, marking up, treatment of watery mouth, joint ill etc. Use antibiotics/metacam etc when indicated being mindful of potential over use and resistance, weighing for market, selection of replacements.

Sheep welfare- Hepatvac injections, worming (and fecal counts), tagging, drenching, treatment/prevention of fly strike, foot trimming, Footvax, Shearing/dagging, identification and treatment of magnesium deficiency, treatment of scald and other foot problems.

Cattle- calving of Sussex cows, including using the calving jack and helping calves to latch on, milking cows to bottle feed calves, moving cattle to grazing and into the barns etc, castrating and ear tagging calves, assisting with hoof trimming, tubing calves, applying spot on and giving boluses, vaccinating, de-horning, TB testing.

Pigs- Feeding, weaning, injecting piglets with Iron and Dectomax, farrowing paperwork, selecting for abattoir, loading and unloading/moving around the barns.

Goats- feeding, worming, tagging, kidding, use of CIDRS, retrieving when escaped! then fixing fencing.

Management- Use of computer technologies to monitor ewes and lambs. Teaching and supervising vet students during the lambing period including allocating workload appropriate to skill level and strengths. Teaching skills such as worming and tagging. Grazing management for the needs of the sheep including amount of grass available and needs of the flock. I have a keen interest in regenerative agriculture and soil health. Loading and turning out ewes and lambs from the lambing shed. Strip grazing.

Other- Driving quad bike and ATV on difficult terrain also with trailer, Driving with the sheep trailer, Telehandler driving- stacking bales in the field and onto flatbed trailer, loading bales into the cattle shed, feeding into hay racks (no ticket at present).

Fox trapping/shooting, pest shooting (crows, jackdaws, squirrels etc), Magpie trapping. Care of chickens and hatching eggs. Raising of day old pheasants and ducks and releasing into the pheasant pen.

Private smallholding (additional help when other staff are off and during busy periods during 2020) - Caring for Turkeys, laying and meat hens. small flock of sheep and 40 Sussex cattle.

Independent contracting shearing during 2021 and 2022 of mainly small flocks and small holders, also occasional shepherding throughout the year for foot trimming and worming etc. I also offer a consultancy service to help select replacements and flock management mainly for smallholders.

I run my own flock of Shetland sheep with around 20 breeding ewes.

Roves Farm - Jan 2022- Jan 2024 - caring for sheep, cattle, pigs, goats and chickens. I undertake all the livestock care and husbandry.

Present- D.brown dairy. Milking and caring for a flock of dairy sheep.
