Milker/General Farm Worker job in <->Dorset<-> required for sheep/dairy farm

A busy family-run sheep dairy farm near Sturminster Newton, Dorset seeks a competent Milker/ General Farm Worker to join the team in January 2018.

The farm milks up to 350 Friesland ewes twice daily in a 12/24 herringbone system with Fulwood parlour.  The flock are housed during the winter and at lambing time, and follows a grassland fed rotation system during the summer months.  Lambing normally occurs in January and April, allowing a 10-11 month milking season, with a dry period during December.

The applicant: It is essential that applicants are proven and competent milkers who can quickly become a reliable and efficient member of the team.  Focus should be on hygiene, flock care and parlour duties. 

Other general farm work will also be required. Specific duties include: Parlour work including milking, washing-down and yard work.  Keeping the parlour and dairy clean.  Drying off and treating ewes.  Flock care including foot trimming and drenching.  Moving stock, cleaning lambing pens, bedding down and yard work.  Assisting with bottle-fed lambs.  Nightly checks during lambing time. 

Occasional assistance with Grassland management – muck spreading, topping, etc.

This is a long-term position and can be offered to a self-employed person on an ongoing basis, or to a permanent employee through the PAYE system.  A competitive package will be agreed depending on experience and the terms of the employment. This is a responsible and fulfilling role, offering full accountability and support to somebody wanting to diversify into this niche dairy sector.
