Stockperson - beef suckler herd, breeding sheep flock with all young stock reared to finish.  

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced stock person to support the owner in the development of a commercial pedigree beef breeding herd and a small breeding sheep flock located in Cambridgeshire.  The enterprise focuses on top commercial genetics, performance recording, low cost production, outstanding stock and final product quality and innovative marketing based on native breeds.  Most of the enterprise is based on Nature Reserve land at low stocking density and most stock are kept completely outdoors all year round.   Established in 2015 the enterprise is in it's second phase of expansion this year.  We will calve 100 cows and approximately 260 ewes next spring on the path to achieve a herd of 300-400 breeding cows and a small flock of  breeding ewes, with associated young stock, over the next few years.  The role: The health and welfare of all stock will be your top priorities with the day to day care of all stock being central to this role.  The owner is frequesntly absent so ability to take full responsibility is essentail  Attention to detail in all aspects of your work will need to be one of your strongest qualities.  You will need to be physically very fit as a lot of walking is required. In depth practical experience of all basic stock tasks including feeding, ideally to include TMR , vaccination, ear tagging, setting up electric fencing and water supplies, to mention a few, is required.  Experience of heat detection in cattle, heat synchronisation and AI would be desirable otherwise a keenness to learn would be required.  You will have experience and licences to drive telehandler and tractors as well as other road vehicles together with livestock and other trailers at times.  An essential part of the role is your ability to demonstrate sound experience of lambing and calving and all that goes with this busy time.  You will understand that long hours will be required at these times of year.  Knowledge and understanding of the application of relevant health and safety legislation is essential as well as bags of common sense and empathy with livestock so as to ensure the well-being of yourself, colleagues and site visitors at all times.  During quiet times of the year there may be a requirement to assist with arable or grassland duties such as hay making.  The person: You will have at least 5 good O Levels or GCSEs and an Agricultural qualification or equivalent .  A strong work ethic with a 'can do' approach with a sense of humour will ensure your success in this role.   We would like all applications to be received by 14th August with a start date ideally soon after.  However, we are prepared to wait for the best!  By applying for this role you are confirming you are eligible to work in the UK. Nursery, primary and secondary schools are all 5-6 miles away with a larger choice within a 10 mile radius.  The rural market town of Ramsey, 6 miles away, has a range of shops, restaurants, supermarkets, schools and nurseries, a sports and leisure centre, local medical services and library which, as well as being local facilities, could all be sources of employment for a partner if required . Peterborough is within easy commuting distance and Cambridge a little further, for more specialist employment opportunities.  We are based in a rural location with limited public transport so a partner would ideally need to be able to drive however, this is not a requirement of the job role
