Soft Fruit Irrigation Manager - excellent salary opportunity - job in <->Herefordshire<->

Farm TypeHorticulture

Through the course of the season (May to November) we pick over 450 tonnes of raspberries that go on to be sold nationwide in Tesco supermarkets.  As irrigation manager at B H Savidge & Son you will be responsible for all irrigation operations over a variety of sites.

There are a range of aspects that make up the role as irrigation manager:

Technical – as irrigation manager you will be expected to learn how to operate the computer based software along with mechanical parts of the irrigation system.

Need to be computer minded, experience of operating the system we use (Adcon Telemetry) would of course be ideal (not essential) but a willingness to learn is a necessity.

Managing inputs and outputs (pH/feed levels, etc.)

Measuring, monitoring and managing run off.

Not only be capable of inputting data but to understand/learn to understand what the data/reports mean and how to interpret this and translate it in the growing of the crop.

Communication & People management – as irrigation manager you will be expected to work successfully alone, as leader of a small group and together with the other members of the management team.

Communication is vital between yourself, management and irrigation workers.

Ability to interpret reports/findings within the system and communicate them back to management.

Liaise with industry representatives who we work alongside to develop our system and keep improving on it.

Practical – as irrigation manager you will need to be relatively practical in the sense that you will need to learn how to construct/dismantle the physical parts that makeup the system.

During the season on a daily basis you will be required to walk the crop to gain an understanding of how the irrigation is impacting on growth – as part of this you will need to take leaf, water and soil samples regularly

Crop walking also means you can spot problems with parts within the system whether it be drip feeders, pumps or piping.

Maintenance is key and as a result swapping parts within the system happens regularly, you will be required to take apart and reassemble all parts.

A stock must be kept of all consumable items – feed/acid – and reordered when necessary.

Experience of working with irrigation systems previously, particularly in the soft fruit industry, would be ideal but not necessary - more crucial is enthusiasm to improve, willingness to acquire new skills and desire to progress. The ability to use your own initiative, learn from your mistakes and aim for high standards whilst under pressure are essential.
