APPRENTICE - Pig Stockperson on progressive farm <->Stowmarket, Suffolk<-> An opening to 'earn while you qualify' for someone with a minimum of 3 yrs UK Residency aged 16-24. The start date for the job is flexible.

To join a progressive, family run, pig rearing and breeding business, working across several units with scope to learn about genetics and gain a wide range skills through additional certificated training courses.  Potential to lead to a permanent post and increased responsibility.  The post includes one day a week in College studying for a Agricultural  Apprenticeship.

Work includes: 

Looking after pigs throughout their growing cycle including being able to take responsibility to work on your own and as part of a friendly team:

Feeding and bedding, handling, moving and transporting

Record keeping both written and on computer

Vaccination and use of veterinary medicines

Selection for slaughter

Cleaning buildings between rearing cycles

Training on pig breeding and genetics  

Collecting and processing boar semen and  artificial insemination (AI)

Use of teleporter and some tractor work once eligible

Straw haulage

Full driving licence preferred

The farm has a good record of employing apprentices and provides a mentoring scheme.

Skills Required: Someone who likes livestock and being amongst animals in general, has good observation skills and can demonstrate attention to detail, is able to keep accurate records, and is able to use a computer. Someone who is able to take responsibly once trained and has the initiative to work on their own whilst being part of a close team.   Current driving licence is an advantage. 

Personal Qualities: To be physically fit, like working outdoors in all weathers even though much of the work is undercover, be prepared to work some weekends and long hours at harvest time when the straw cart takes place. A person who understands the countryside and the cycle of rearing livestock.

In your application provide two references, explain where you will live and how you will get to work each day. 

Entry onto the apprenticeship is subject to a thorough initial assessment to clarify course suitability. Entrants must have the ability to achieve English and Mathematics GCSE and be able to manage the requirements of a Level 2 vocational qualifications.
