Tractor work: Gained experience during BTEC at college with a variety of tractor skills including ploughing, power harrowing, trailer work, fencing with a post knocker and grassland management. Spraying with a 12m mounted sprayer and fertiliser spreading using a 2.5ton trailed spreader with a Case MXU 115 in New Zealand. Two silage seasons working for a local contractor mainly driving a Massey Ferguson 6485, 7618 and 6290, along with some experience on a Fendt 820 Vario. Work included silage carting with a 12ton trailer, with a lot of work on some very steep ground and soil preparations with a 3m power harrow. Fifteen months placement on a 2500 acre arable farm driving tractors with a range of horse power from 200 to 400; John Deere 7530, Valtra T181 and a John Deere 8310r on all-round soucy tracks. Experience of primary cultivations and capable of using variety of cultivation equipment such as Vaderstad Carrier 6.5m, vaderstad Topdown 5m, Simba discs 6m and Spring tine cultivator 6m. Hedge cutting experience responsible for all farm hedge cutting throughout winter using Bomford 6m reach. Experience of spraying using Berthoud self-propelled 30m sprayer. Responsible for all pre emergence sprays on winter wheat and spring barley, T0, T1, T 2 and T3 sprays, glyphosate applications when required on fallow ground and final liquid nitrogen dose on winter wheat applied via variable rate. Good maintenance skills fixing nozzles, pipes and adjusting computer software on the sprayer for different circumstances. First harvest involved corn carting using 14ton trailer on John Deere 7530. Second harvest main combine driver using Claas Lexion 770 Terratrac with 12m header. Trained myself by reading manual for several months before harvest. Able to carry out daily servicing and maintenance and carry out repairs to header when problems occurred. Harvesting experience of wheat, barley and oilseed rape. learnt how to operate Kvernland Accord 6m drill in Spring for relief drilling work of Spring barley. Learnt how to operate Biodrill with spring tines attached to vaderstad topdown through reading manuals and assistance from Vaderstand area manager. Drilled turnips and hybrid kale/rape for sheep winter grazing and game cover and environmental stewardship buffer strips. Experience using telehandlers for a variety of tasks. Can operate JCB 414 Farm Master for loading grain lorries with 2ton tipping bucket. Responsible for loading grain lorries under pressure due to time scales with lorry drivers tachographs.

Other livestock experience

Dairy experience: Work placement on 2 farms in New Zealand on grass based systems; a 380 cow herd of Friesian X Jersey milked through a 36/72 herringbone parlour, and a 600 cow herd of Friesian X Jersey milked in a 54-point rotary parlour. Block calving herds meant experience of calving difficult births and collecting calves with the mother. Extensive system meant only fed after morning milking with a ration of maize silage and palm kernel extract. Relief milking at home on weekends and some weekdays gaining valuable experience milking in a new 20/40 herringbone parlour with a herd of 150+ Holstein cows. Along side milking, gained experience of herd health, mastitis treatment and control, annual vaccinations of BVD and Leptospirosis, heat detection and assessing lame cows for treatment. Sheep experience: 15 month placement as part of a degree course on an arable and sheep farm. Closed flock of 680 Heartline ewes with 150 ewe lambs. First season at the farm responsible for day time lambing shift from 7am - 7pm. Ewes lambed outdoors in the daytime and in the shed at night. Collected ewes and lambs from field with a buggy and trailer and was responsible for all lambing. As several people were around, assistance was given during busy periods. Second lambing season at farm involved night time lambing shift with no assistance. Able to lamb sheep unassisted. Orphan lambs required feeding at midnight, some needing to be tube fed which I am able to do unaided. Able to foot trim ewes, treat ewes and lambs with injections for medical issues such as joint ill, antibiotic injection for wounds, foot rot and fly strike, foot bathing sheep, worming sheep. Every other weekend was spent 'on duty' for the sheep to relieve the full time shepherd. Duties included driving around the sheep and checking for abnormalities and problems.

Farming background

Not from a farm but lived in the countryside all my life surrounded by farms. Six months work placement in New Zealand as part of BTEC, 15 months placement on arable and sheep farm as part of degree course. Experience on arable includes cultivation work, drilling, spraying and combining cereals. Also experience in holidays and weekends working as a relief milker on a local dairy farm and silaging for a local contractor.
